All websites need a place to reside, a piece of hardware on which to exist. This place is called "hosting." There are many ways to host your website. Big companies buy their own hardware and do their own hosting, but most businesses sign up with a hosting company. Each hosting company offers various types of hosting plans. Generally, these plans fall into one of three categories:

• Shared Hosting - Inexpensive because your website shares the same machine as other websites. This presents a number of technical risks including security, search engine black-listing and use restrictions due to the behavior of others completely unrelated to your business.
• Dedicated Hosting - More expensive because your website is the only one on the machine
• Managed Hosting - Shared or Dedicated, these plans are hands-off for you. The hosting company does all the work.

Most of the time, small businesses arrange for hosting through their web development company, who acts as a reseller for a hosting company. And that sets up the scenario we are all so familiar with - a website problem is hurting your business while the website developer blames the hosting company and the hosting company blames the developer.
